Shed Skin
Have you ever wished to begin something extraordinary yet soon realise that it was not necessarily for you? Not to say that we are not capable of remarkable things, but rather that we are destined for something better.
Well, today’s artist encompasses this phenomenon greatly. We have decided to put you in the shoes of a musician who chose to leave the music industry in one sense yet come back in another. Sink into your space as we understand the journey of former rap artist: Eric David.
Eric David has always known his fate with regards to music. With his mother already being a strong supporter with regards to his destiny, he began his luck at the tender age of fourteen – where he began an impromptu dive into production. However, as our young talent’s spirit continued to evolve musically, he decided to place voice over beat and began rapping just over a year later. With Eric’s sound now freshly formed, he began uploading his art on YouTube, but soon deleted them off the platform due to doubtfulness with regards to his music. It is clear that talent, unfortunately, does not stop insecurity.
However, with great role models like Daddy Yankee inspiring him as he grew up, he reassessed himself as an artist and soon reignited his drive to become a somebody within the music industry. Eric, is a New York born kid that grew up in Nicaragua – which explains his admiration towards Latin music. His love for Hip-Hop and Soul grew when he moved back to New York at eight years old and later to Maryland at ten.
With his passions still bubbling, Eric gracefully carried forth his life into the music scene by releasing content such as:
His Speak Your Mind mixtape on SoundCloud;
Producing the group, we now know as Oshun’s music back in high school;
And later dropping his last, yet best EP, 3509 Glimpse on SoundCloud.
It is clear to see that our marvel was on a lovely streak with regards to his music journey. Yet, the question remains: Why did this wonder child stop rapping?
Our prodigy stated that even though he adored the rapping scene, it came with too many demands. He further explained his point by stating that it insisted that one maintains a certain image of themselves and encouraged one to adopt a certain type of lifestyle. “Being a rapper can make you selfish.” Eric expressed in a gutted tone of voice. It was not only the culture of the Rap scene that disheartened our prodigy, but also his friend and partner at the time. With his partner becoming complacent, Eric began to reflect on his character. It has now been four years since our artist made the decision to leave the rap scene. And quite frankly, he has been doing greater both musically and spiritually since he left this realm. Even though our marvel has left the rap scene, this does not mean he has left the music scene…
Eric is now part of the DMV, a music scene revolving around the states of Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia (therefore creating the name, DMV). This music scene is dedicated to giving artists a place to show off their beautiful work – whether it be through radio, production, singing and so much more. Fortunately, being a part of this division is not the only way Eric has evolved. He now teaches Public Relations; films and directs music videos as well as assists in creating records for upcoming artists. Even though he has left the rapping scene, it’s evident that this decision does not stop our marvel from venturing out into the many other spheres of the music industry.
Surprisingly, with all these new skills and talents flooding Eric’s way, he did not leave his first form musical love: Production. Eric David has, in fact, become a regular producer for the well-known group, Oshun. From producing their first EP, AFAHYE, to producing three tracks on their latest album Bittersweet Vol. 1, it is clear that Eric’s journey never really stopped.
By looking at Eric’s tale, it is clear to see that it is more than alright to leave certain activities and talents behind. Sometimes, these phases act as a steppingstone to who we are truly meant to be. Shedding skin is a part of the human process. Therefore, we should not fear its alchemy, but rather embrace it completely. Ladies and Gentlemen… This was, and now is:
Eric David.
