This week's pick: Cellophane - FKA Twigs
For this week’s “Song of the Week” segment, we bring you Cellophane by FKA Twigs. This Avant-pop artist gifts us with a piano ballad that really tugs at the strings of your soul, leaving you with a sense of vulnerability that she majestically portrays with her pole-dancing skills in the songs music video.
Cellophane brings us something that is a little different to FKA Twigs’ usual outlandish, yet exquisitely put together pieces. Known for her controversial yet artistic approaches and imagery, she paints the image of a woman desperately trying to preserve what she and her significant other share, just as cellophane (or “cling wrap”) does for leftover food. Reducing herself to nothing but a mere morsel emphasizes just how vulnerable she is in the situation.
Once again, she blesses us with her distinct whisper-vocals and falsettos which harmonize perfectly with the melodious cello and piano composition. This masterpiece conjures up a deep yearning sensation inside the listener as FKA Twigs bares herself to her audience.
The music video accompanying the song can be described as “chilling yet beautiful”. Here FKA Twigs flexes her incredible athletic ability on the pole in attempts to satisfy a seemingly absent crowd before spiraling out of control in what appears to be emotional defeat.
The music video, in conjunction with the poignant lyrics and transcending melodies stabs at your emotions and leaves you wondering whether you should be shedding a tear or gaping in awe. As usual, you can expect nothing but art from this controversial yet super talented artist, and if you aren’t already an FKA Twigs fan, this song is definitely sure to convert you.
