Thoughts on Revenge of the Dreamers III
-Mongezi-
When Revenge 3 was announced back at the beginning of last year, I was super excited. The previous two iterations of Revenge were quite brilliant which made me check out artists like Bas, Omen and Cozz - which all happen to be good artists. With new signees EarthGang & J.I D., I went into this album hoping for more of the same vibe. What stood out for me, even before listening to a single song on the album, was the length. Lengthy albums always suffer with me because my interest will only peak in the middle of listening. Regardless of this, I went into it with high hopes.
So Right of the bat, the album starts off with a strong opening with the song Under The Sun, which has a suprise feature from Kendrick and DaBaby, which we can all agree can do no wrong at this point in the piece. The best verse on this song arguably comes from Lute, a Dreamville signee who is less known then the other artists in the song. The next 10 tracks provide brilliant moments in the album with a few stand-out songs being Down Bad, LamboTruck and Wells Fargo (Interlude). At this point you can tell that the artists were having fun making these songs.
By the time I got to listen to Rembrandt...Run It Back, it felt like the album was in decline with a below average song that followed right after. The rest of the album was solid, and had a strong close to the album with Sacrifices, which is my favourite song on the album, closely followed by Sleep Deprived.
I got the clear impression that the dreamville signees were not to be taken lightly. Firstly, Johnny Venus from EarthGang was the biggest surprise with the creativity and influence he has at this halfway point. J.I.D. uses his voice perfectly to provide smooth and intricate verses and melodies. What the album does suffer from, is the placement of some of the songs in the second half of the album. There was no cohesion and I found it very difficult to listen to.
Overall apart from Rembrandt...Run It Back & Sunset, the album was pretty solid and it has made me want to check out artists like Saba, Lute and Reason.
