Song of the Week: Pivot Gang – Mathematics (feat. Femdot)

Coming from the collaborative efforts of the Pivot Gang rap group of which Chicago-born MC Saba is the most notable act, the song of the week is Pivot Gang’s Mathematics. Bringing to us dreamy and ethereal production with wavy beats that one can’t help but liken to Saba’s production style and selection of beats in general.

The track is a short but satisfying flurry of calm but hard-hitting bars, quips and lexical plays concerning the tracks titular concept: mathematics. We hear this especially in lines like “Mathematics; throw that ass in a circumference”, and “Mathematics; I was halfway there like the radius”. In true mathematical fashion, the combined efforts of each MC on this track create a wavy and sensual undertone to the sharp lyrical content. My personal favourite line in the song is “Mathematics; ghost ride the whip like a hearse”, for its whimsical yet dark overtones which are also worth considering when you think about the fact that Pivot Gang actually lost founding member John Walt in 2017.

The death reverberated throughout the members of Pivot Gang and Saba explored deep emotions regarding death itself and hardship in his 2018 album, CARE FOR ME, where on the song CALLIGRAPHY, Saba says “My best friend obituary really hang on my wall, by the dresser, I’m tryna see it a life lesson”. Context aside, the song absolutely slaps and put together with the other tracks on the album, Pivot Gang has truly shown talent and desire and we will be bumping this for a very long time.
